The success of the Houston based Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship is based on its positioning as an avant-garde community, says Angela Moretti.

In Houston, Texas there are many organizations seeking to increase capital for local research and technology ventures. Among them the Rice Alliance makes a difference.

Funds flowing into Rice University’s technology research, education and outreach initiatives have more than doubled since the alliance’s 1999 formation as a cooperative effort among the schools of engineering, natural sciences and business. See:
http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2010/06/21/story3.html?ana=e_ph

The alliance’s membership structure and competitions stand out. They include the annual “battles” of business plans (recently featured in Fortune magazine: http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2010/smallbusiness/1005/gallery.rice_business_plan.fortune/index.html); and quarterly forums with competitions for most promising ventures.

The Rice Alliance is an avant-garde community that actively promotes new research concepts and the marshalling of resources to pursue business opportunities, regardless of source. The actively sponsored and organized competitions include extensive feedback and follow-ups that drive toward overall improvement of ideas and better commercialization.

These competitions, which are open to all, not only draw investors and benefit the winners; they also create a strong sense of community where participants feel valued contributing to the advancement of research and business in Houston.

Adaptive systems are complex in themselves but dealing with human adaptive systems adds a new complex component which is the ambiguity implicit in human behavior.

The existence of conscious and non-conscious aspects of human behavior produces naturally the existence of an ambiguous environment.

The purpose of adaptive system management is to influence human adaptive systems using the object driven technologies included in the Unicist Standard.

The development of the Unicist Standard Language was necessary to provide a context in order to understand, communicate and influence the management of human adaptive systems.”

We are republishing the conclusions on the research on the origin of the economic/financial crisis that started in 2008 developed at The Unicist Research Institute that was led by Peter Belohlavek.

We are republishing the conclusions on the research on the origin of the economic/financial crisis that started in 2008 developed at The Unicist Research Institute that was led by Peter Belohlavek.

The financial crisis 2008 is not just one more crisis. It is a structural crisis where the roots of the capitalist system have been threatened.

The capitalist system is not only based on private property, it is based on trust and credibility and the integration of the population in the property of the economic institutions.

The financial crisis broke the integration of the system between the market and the companies and between the companies and their shareholders.

This crisis will provoke the generation of a more stable organization of markets. Speed of growth will recover in all those countries where there is a gap of added value to be empowered using technologies. But growth will be lower than in the past.

We will begin with a synthetic presentation of the history of the crisis and the expected solution.

The history of the crisis has two basic preconditions and two main triggering causes.

The preconditions are the fall of the communist system and the use of consumerism in order to sustain scarcity as an economic driver.

The two triggering causes were the technological plateau and shareholders dominance in economic organizations.

The dot.com “prelude” was a demonstration of the technological plateau and of shareholders’ dominance using the money of the “market”.

Mobile technology is evolving extremely fast. Understanding how Nokia is managing this fast evolution in product development will give you a benchmark to understand the new paradigms.

We strongly recommend watching the interview with Mary McDowell – Nokia’s Chief Development Officer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySoUGLCYnJc

The question we would like to propose is how a market can be managed when the evolution of the technology is extremely fast.

In one week you will find a response to the question on this blog.

To achieve the goal of having reliable knowledge of an adaptive system it is necessary to have both the fundamental knowledge and the technical analytical knowledge.

Businesses are an example of adaptive systems and require dealing with their integrity in order to influence them to achieve objectives. A paradigmatic case is to “make” an adaptive system grow, e.g. a business.

It is necessary to have an integrated knowledge to influence the evolution of adaptive systems. Changes in adaptive systems cannot be pulled nor pushed. Evolution needs to be catalyzed in order to achieve possible goals.

Catalyzing implies installing objects in the processes that work as “strange attractors” to produce the results they were created for. To do so it is necessary to develop a conceptual design of the problem in order to integrate all the elements that are part of the system.

To achieve the goal of having reliable knowledge of an adaptive system it is necessary to have both the fundamental knowledge and the technical analytical knowledge.

Fundamental knowledge

The knowledge of the fundamentals of a reality is basic for individuals’ actions. It is stored in the long term memory and allows spontaneous actions in real-time.

The conscious knowledge of the fundamentals of a given reality has the following characteristics.

1) Defines possibilities
It defines the field of what is possible to be achieved.
2) Allows front-view
It makes the perception of the final picture of actions possible.
3) Destructive tests
It requires making the necessary destructive tests of their validity in order to measure the limits of their functionality.
4) Sustains maximal strategies
It allows going beyond the boundaries of the present situation because it works in homologous fields.
5) Backward-thinking: Pert thinking
It is based on seeing the solution and starting from the conceptual output when developing taxonomic action plans.
6) Future oriented
In the short or the long run all living beings will act according to their nature. Understanding the nature, defined by the fundamentals, allows forecasting the future.
7) Systemic & Conceptual thinking
Systemic and Conceptual thinking are necessary to apprehend the fundamentals using conceptual thinking to develop taxonomies using systemic thinking.

Synthesis: Fundamentals are action driven
Fundamentals are necessary to develop activities in real time having the needed speed and acceleration to influence reality.

Technical-analytical knowledge

1) Defines the probabilities
It allows making the analysis of the experiences to define the probabilities of occurrence of facts.
2) Allows rear-view
As it is based on facts and theories it is necessary to analyze the past in order to learn from it.
3) Non-destructive tests
Technical-analytical knowledge works within predefined boundaries. Therefore the knowledge is only valid within these limits. There is no need for destructive tests.
4) Sustains minimum strategies
Minimum strategies require a strict procedure to make things happen without depending on external elements. Technical analytical knowledge allows developing these procedures within the boundaries individuals can manage.
5) Forward-thinking: Gantt thinking
It defines the elements that need to be built and integrated following a step by step approach. It implies dividing reality into “independent” objects to integrate them afterwards.
6) Past & Present Oriented
Analysis requires the existence of elements that are being observed, measured and analyzed. Therefore it is based on the pre-existence of these elements.
7) Analytic & Systemic thinking
Analytic thinking is necessary to divide reality into manageable elements and systemic thinking is necessary to reintegrate them in a functional unit.

Synthesis: Technical-analytical knowledge is control driven
Technical analytical knowledge is necessary to measure and compare the existing facts with the objective that had to be achieved.

Producing growth

A system grows when it appropriates more energy than it has spent to produce it. This implies that it needs to generate an added value to the environment that is higher than the cost to produce it.

Growth problems are always big changes

A big change is necessary when an adaptive system, e.g. a business, wants to grow beyond the natural growth driven by the trends of the environment.

Big changes are energy consuming. Therefore it has to be clear if the energy is available. The use of objects is an energy multiplier. Objects are a mass that provides a source of energy to influence change.

The energy available depends on the technology and the knowledge to make use of the technology. Objects are part of the technology that has to be available.

Most of the failures in growth happen because the energy required is not available. This might happen because of the lack of hardware (including objects), software or peopleware.

Knowledge includes the human factor and defines the possibility to generate additional added value to go beyond the existing boundaries to expand the vital space of the system in order to make growth happen.

Conclusions

Managing both the fundamental and the technical-analytical knowledge is necessary to influence adaptive systems to grow.

The knowledge of fundamentals will give you the front-view to produce the growth and the technical-analytical knowledge will give you the rear-view to control the process.

The notorious capacity of Procter & Gamble is given by the way it manages the social insertion of innovations.

The notorious capacity of Procter & Gamble is given by the way it manages the social insertion of innovations.

We recommend watching the following two short presentations of Procter & Gamble at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycMXZDybhlw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x93YopVXJSM

Innovation is the basis for economic growth. Essentially, countries, cultures, institutions, and individuals grow only in the fields where they are open to innovations.

The purpose of innovation is to overcome scarcity. That is why only people or cultures that have the will, find the way to overcome scarcity. This is the cultural context that fosters innovation.

The driver of innovation is human creation. The word creation is used in the sense of recreation. Humans create based on the existing energy.

The maximal strategy of innovations drives towards the solution of a scarcity. Therefore innovative organizations have the perception that they add value to the environment. But this is only true if the minimum strategy is also fulfilled.

The minimum strategy implies inserting the innovations into the social capital of the environment. Social capital is defined by the strength of the bonds that integrate the members of a community.

Commercial innovations need to be only one step ahead of the habits of the environment. If they are more than one step ahead they fail, unless there is an extreme need and they are, implicitly, a “back to basics”.

In this field Procter & Gamble is a notorious benchmark.

The archetype of China is a unique case of a culture that has the capacity to grow based on the internal consistency of its model.

The archetype of China is a unique case of a culture that has the capacity to grow based on the internal consistency of its model, a model that became complementary to the globalization process.

We strongly recommend watching the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mRlgQKWlnQ

China’s Structure

China is a culture based on the consistency of the social and individual efforts and the capacity of accepting trade-offs to achieve the goals of the country.

The Chinese model has to be understood in itself without comparing it with other countries. It has multiple economic models working simultaneously. It is neither a communist nor a capitalist model. It uses multiple unique solutions which imply permanent trade-offs between the different models to achieve its growth.

The Communist Party can be considered as homologous to the ancient nobility in Europe but representing the interests of China as a country and the needs of its population.

Entering the Communist Party needs to be earned because within the party there has to be an ideological consistency to allow a democratic behavior. The Communist Party is the “Establishment” of China.

Confucius’ Concept

Confucianism is a functional philosophy for a culture that needs to grow in a context of an extremely large country with a large population. Order is necessary to sustain consistency.

Minorities in China have to behave within the limits of the explicit and implicit Chinese model. Censorship and self-censorship are a need to avoid that the culture loses its consistency. But although censorship becomes necessary in this context, it is also the implicit weakness of the Chinese archetype.

Cultures evolve based on their implicit weaknesses. Therefore, a generational change can be expected in this field depending on the new trade-offs the culture will make.

A Shielded Culture

China has been, is and will be a shielded archetype, protecting its culture and beliefs in order to ensure its consistency and allowing making the necessary trade-offs to grow.

This shield was represented by the Chinese Wall in the past, and now it is represented by the multiple regulations that establish the framework of the country.

Maximal Strategy

The maximal strategy of China is driven by the working capacity of the culture and the catalyst for the minimum strategy is their cultural shield that ensures the consistency of its actions. The cultural shield works as a protection from foreign influence and internal distortions.

Minimum Strategy

The minimum strategy is driven by the individual working capacity of its population. The entropy inhibitor, to ensure the achievement of growth, is the ideological shield that ensures the focus of the efforts on the objectives that are being achieved.

The personal capacity of making trade-offs is installed in the population and makes individuals extremely focused achievers.

To apprehend the Chinese archetype it is necessary to understand Doers, avoiding ideological, religious or social comparisons. China was, is and will be unique. China doesn’t base its expansion on exporting culture, but on exporting products.

This allows learning from P&G how to manage innovation to make it successful in the markets.

The Unicist Standard includes a fundamental approach to deal with innovations that allows integrating fundamentals with technical analytical knowledge to produce successful innovations.

The question we are posing is: Which are the fundamentals of innovation?

You can find information on how Procter & Gamble deals with innovations presented by Robert Bob McDonald, COO of Procter & Gamble. There are two short presentations at:

We invite you to apprehend the nature of China’s archetype. But consider that it is necessary to avoid comparisons with other cultures.

We invite you to apprehend the nature of China’s archetype. But consider that it is necessary to avoid comparisons with other cultures.

“The reach of one’s globalization is defined by the limit of the pronoun WE.”

If you are really interested in understanding the Chinese archetype we recommend listening to the lecture you find at:
